This is one of the most common questions we get as pool people, and for good reason – it is one of the most expensive parts of being a pool owner, and one of the most important.

Clean, clear water is maintained because of three things; chemistry, circulation and filtration. So this post will focus on # 2 – circulation.

Despite what people think, a pool pump does not need to run 24/7 in order to maintain clean and clear water. A good rule of thumb for summer time is between 8-12 hours a day but it can vary according to the efficiency of your pump. And yes you do still need to run it in winter if you want to avoid an expensive cleanup in spring time.

But of course running your pump will make no difference if your water chemistry is not in balance, so always focus on number 1: chemistry and number 3: filtration.

After 15+ years servicing many different pools, we believe the best pumps in the industry are a Pentair Challenger Pump – because they’re one of the most reliable, parts are readily available and the price is competitive; or an IntelliFlo 2 Variable Speed Pump, because they are extremely energy efficient with estimated cost savings of up to $1500 a year. You can run this pump for 24 hours (and you should) but it won’t cost any more than a different pump.

If you have any more questions about your pump, filter or water chemistry drop by our retail store anytime to talk with the experts.
